About the Artist

Doug Kinnett is a painter, printmaker and jeweler who lives and works in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

In the late 70s, Doug concentrated on landscape oil paintings.  During the 80s, while living in Wichita, Kansas, his paintings were large abstract expressionist oils on canvas and he began working with woodcut block prints.  Doug took it upon himself to beautify Shepherdstown in 1987 by collecting junk for his collages.  Between 1988 and 1995 he worked exclusively as a printmaker.

In  1996, Doug took a leave of absence from Shepherd University and returned to oil painting on canvas.  He also bought a kiln and now explores shape and color with ceramics. He incorporates these designs into wooden and wrought iron furniture.  He is always up for the challenge of a kitchen counter or a bathroom wall.  If this process interests you, please ask him about it today.

Process

Kinnett's recent paintings are floral pattern images, experimenting with layers of high intensity color.  Color and shape are the most important elements in the abstract images.  Some of the plant forms come from drawings and photographs, but many of the forms are stylized or even completely invented.  When this work is at its best, it is playful to eye.

Background patterns in works such as Flowers Au Go Go, Industrious Fern, and The View From Piet's Patio are loose and divisionist, with foregrounds that are hard, solid color shapes. In a new group of works, called the ElDorado Series, all the works are 36 inches square and there is very little modulation of color values. Overlapping line patterns cover flat colors shaped in an ambiguous space.

Dr. Kinnett holds a B.A., a Masters degree in Painting, a Doctorate in Art Education from, and has taught at all levels, from kindergarten to graduate school and most recently held a position as Professor of Art Education at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, WV.
