Doug Kinnett
Floral Language, 1995
Oil on canvas
31 × 38 inches
At the time it was completed, Doug was far ahead with drawings for other paintings and could see that he was searching for a way to paint florals that were not typical or trite. The dean of the division of fine art at Shepherd College was famous for saying, “Today’s artists can’t paint flowers. The subject matter is just too laden with sentimental associations.” Despite this maxim and maybe even as a challenge to it, Dr. Kinnett began drawing flowers.
